FOR THE
CHILDREN
OF HAITI
"out of the rubble and despair rose a chorus of voices so sweet that you would have thought that it was heaven sent, alas, it was not the angels singing in beautiful harmony, but the children of the orphanage singing repeatedly;
Merci Langford, Merci, Merci"
Another team of volunteers will head to Haiti on November 21 to continue work on the Children of Haiti Langford Community project, which has morphed into something much more than rebuilding an orphanage in Port-au-Prince. Although a lot has been accomplished since the last trip in March, there is still much more to be completed to reach the goals of improving the quality of life for the children and staff and the long-term sustainability of the Baby Jesus of Prague orphanage. Click on the pdf below for more details...
With the generosity of our communitys residents and businesses, our goal is to help the Sisters of the Baby Jesus of Prague Orphanage in Port au Prince, Haiti rebuild their destroyed orphanage. To provide the orphaned children with a safe haven, a chapel to practice their faith, and a classroom to learn both academic and life skills. The completed project will be engineered to a post disaster standard and a component of the project will include long term operational /sustainability options.

As the Mayor of the City of Langford, I am pleased on behalf of Council and our community to officially pledge our support for the Children of Haiti Project.
I have personally spoken with the team who visited the orphanage in Port au Prince, and I have reviewed the photos. We recognize that the challenges in Haiti are enormous, and that helping the sisters and 50 orphaned children may not seem that monumental in the wake of what has happened there, however, I believe that our project will not only address the immediate needs of the children, it will also send a timely message of hope to those in the orphanage and to the neighbours in that community who rely on the spiritual, emotional, and nutritional support the orphanage offers.
I would also like to think that the project will serve as an example for other communities, individuals and even the youngest of students that when we set our hearts and minds to it, we can and will make a significant difference in the lives of others, some 4000 miles away.
Our project, Langfords community project, the Children of Haiti Project, will provide the vulnerable, precious and extraordinary children of the orphanage with a home that will nurture and care for them as we would want our own children to be cared for.
For further information on the project, I encourage you to visit the official web site: www.teamhaitichildren.com
I thank you in advance for your support for this project.

"The Face of Haiti"
By Alesha Beckett
This original acrylic on canvas is of one of the little orphans holding a little bear stuffy that the children of Strawberry Vale School sent down to the orphanage. The young artist has made two trips to Haiti this past year to work with the children of the orphanage and wanted to offer up her work as a means of helping with some aspect of the rebuilding.
"The Children of Haiti"

"Up Close and Personal"
This copy of an original sketch captures the emotions of a reporter on assignment in Haiti. This impressive painting is 53 X 40.5 and reflects the actual faces of the children from the orphanage we are currently rebuilding.

White Encounter by Robert Bateman
Print published in1980
The polar bear wasn't there a moment ago. Now what?
"The idea for this painting came while driving on one of those bright, cold, January days, with a strong northwest wind following a snowstorm. The back roads near our home were mostly blown bare, but here and there they were clogged with thick drifts...then the thought occurred to me about traveling in the Arctic. What if you entered a drift and unknown to you, a polar bear entered the drift from the other side. By the time you both knew this, it would be too late. With polar bears it is important to see them from as far away as possible. As soon as I returned from the drive, I did a sketch of the concept. This painting is the way I expressed the discovery." - R. Bateman
